When a rogue pulsar sweeps through a star system and threatens to destroy all life on a planet, the Federation is faced with a daunting choice: stand by and witness the extinction of a thriving civilization, or violate the Prime Directive and mount a desperate effort to protect the planet. The Enterprise is sent to aid the doomed planet.
Tthe Payav are struggling to rebuild in the wake of the pulsar's damage. The Enterprise returns with a plan to help restore the planet's atmosphere, but the Klingon Empire has also come to the aid of one of the world's many factions. Captain Kirk finds himself once again pitted against Klingon commander Kor.
Admiral Kirk discovers some shipping irregularities centered around Mestiko. Authorized to go on a fact-finding tour to the planet, Kirk takes along his old friend Dr. McCoy to investigate. What Kirk finds is a web of intrigue.
The rebuilding of Mestiko is starting to make progress: the atmosphere is partially restored and Federation scientists are introducing new methods of replenishing the planet's biosphere. But their efforts are being stymied by the growing power of the mar-Attya, who shun all offworlders.
Twenty-five years after the disaster, Mestiko's recovery is stagnating amid social unrest. A lunar colony designed for scientific research might give the people hope - until a local terrorist group attacks the colony and steals an experimental subspace weapon. The Enterprise is sent to find the Torye and retrieve the weapon.
Raya el-Mora and the people of Mestiko are stunned to learn that Captain Kirk, the man who has played such a pivotal role in their lives over the past three decades, is now gone. The surviving crew of the Enterprise gather together at this strife-born world one last time as its future hangs in the balance.
