TrekNovels is a fan project run by one person. It stores as little as it can: no advertising, no tracking across sites, visitor statistics only if you allow them, and nothing is ever sold or shared for marketing.

Your shelf

When you mark a book (want, own, reading, read, favourite) or rate it, that is saved in your browser and in an account so it isn't lost. Until you sign in, the account is anonymous: a random ID with no name or email attached. If you sign in with an email link, your email address is added to the account so you can open the same shelf on other devices.

Each book page shows totals, such as how many people have read a book and its average rating. These are counts only: nobody else can see which books you marked or how you rated them.

Accounts are stored with Supabase. We keep your shelf for as long as you have an account.

Messages and error reports

The Contact form and "Report an error" are emailed to us through Mailgun. They are not stored on the site. If you leave your name or email, we use it only to reply.

Visitor statistics

If you choose "Allow" when the site first asks, Google Analytics counts your visit: which pages you open, what you do there (such as searching, marking or rating a book, opening a store link, or signing in), how you got here, and your rough location, device and browser. It sets two cookies (_ga and _ga_BYZ1VNYQCN) to recognise you on later visits, for up to two years. It is set up for statistics only, never for ads or personalisation. If you choose "No thanks", or don't answer, nothing of Google Analytics is loaded.

You can change your mind at any time through "Cookie settings" at the bottom of every page; saying no removes the cookies. Your choice is kept in your browser's local storage.

Separately, Cloudflare Web Analytics counts page views for everyone, without cookies and without recognising you between visits.

Bot check

To keep out spam and fake accounts, creating an account, signing in and sending a message run Cloudflare Turnstile, which looks at your browser and connection to tell people from bots. It does not set tracking cookies.

Hosting and fonts

The site is served by Cloudflare, which handles your IP address and browser details to deliver pages and stop attacks. Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, which also sees your IP address.

Store links

Some store links are affiliate links. When you click one, the store (for example Amazon, or Kobo through Rakuten Advertising) may set its own cookies to credit the sale to TrekNovels, under its own privacy policy. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Nothing is set until you click.

So those links go to your own country's store, the site asks Cloudflare which country you're visiting from (or reads your browser's language). Only the country is used; it's kept in your browser until you close the tab and isn't stored anywhere else.

Cookies and browser storage

TrekNovels sets no cookies of its own; the only cookies are Google Analytics', and only if you allow them (see Visitor statistics). It uses your browser's local storage to keep your shelf, your sign-in and your cookie choice, which is needed for these to work. Clearing your browser data removes the local copy; your account keeps its copy.

Your choices

You can use TrekNovels without marking anything, and then no account is made.

To delete your account and shelf yourself, open the account menu at the top right (Sign in or Account) and choose "Delete account" or "Delete my saved shelf". It is removed straight away, on every device, together with your email if you added one.

To see what we hold about you or correct it, send a message through the Contact page with the email you signed in with. If you're in the EU or UK you also have the right to complain to your data protection authority.

Changes

If this page changes, the date at the top changes with it.
